REFLECTION: From an anonymous State Trooper
I’m not a fan of all electric vehicles. Too many variables affecting battery consumption. Definitely not suited for cold climates. The following experience just cements my distaste for EV’s, especially Teslas.
I get sent to a motorist assist the other day, at the start of our snow storm. Tesla on the side of the interstate, dead battery. So I arrive on scene and the occupants have the right-front door open. They tell me that they can’t open any other doors, because the battery is dead. Sure enough. Can’t open the doors from inside or outside. The driver also can’t get her license out of the glove box where she put it during their trip. Because the glove box opens electronically… and the battery is dead. You actually have to use the computer in the centre of the dash to open the glove box.
They said they had 10% battery left, should’ve been plenty to get from that location to the charging station nearby. Then all of a sudden the whole car shut off and they coasted to the shoulder.
So now I have to find them a tow. No one wants to tow EV’s. Finally found one company to do it. 8 mile trip to the charging station in Tomah. $1,000! Normal vehicle on the flatbed would’ve been $150.
So now we’re at the Tesla superchargers. Guess what. Can’t open the f’n charging port because the battery is dead!!! The ports open, you guessed it, electronically!. And we also can’t open the doors now (had to close the one open door when it was loaded onto the wrecker). The owners manual is in the on board computer, but the battery is dead.
I got the occupants to a store where they’d be warm while calling the rental company to figure out how to charge this POS, so I’m not sure of the outcome. I had to leave for a crash report.
I’ll stick with my dinosaur burner.

STONES: Written by Dr. Michael Christopher Keane, a Kerryman
While a few of the stones remain in their original location, many were removed around 100-150 years ago and are now to be found either in the British Museum in London or in University College Cork (UCC). The following is a brief outline of the story of the Farran Ogham stones, including the continuing controversies over the years surrounding the removal of the majority of them from their original location. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/cork/news/irish-ogham-stones?utm_source=Ireland+Reaching+Out+-+Full+Database&utm_campaign=4d51826a03-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_ogham_stones&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-3ed2ea7131-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D&ct=t(EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_ogham_stones)

PASSOVER: Pesach 2023 begins before sundown on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, and ends after nightfall on April 13, 2023.
Note: The Jewish calendar date begins at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin at sundown on the secular dates listed, with the following day being the first full day of the holiday. (Thus, the first Passover seder is held on the evening of the first date listed.) Jewish calendar dates conclude at nightfall.
The first two days of Passover (from sundown of the first date listed, until nightfall two days later) are full-fledged, no-work-allowed holiday days. The subsequent four days are Chol Hamoed, when work is allowed, albeit with restrictions. Chol Hamoed is followed by another two full holiday days.

NHS: On 5 July 1948, in the same year that the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, the National Health Service (NHS) was established. An unprecedented number of healthcare workers were needed to staff Britain’s new health service.
Consequently, the British government began to recruit doctors, nurses and healthcare workers from Commonwealth countries and its colonies. Many passengers who migrated to Britain after the Second World War would go on to work for the NHS. Indeed, Sullivan was one of seven passengers on the Empire Windrush who listed their occupations as ‘Nurse’. Of these seven, six were female and one was male.

PEE: Uroscopy was first record in the fourth millennium BCE and became common practice in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, recognized for its utility as one component in a physician’s diagnostic repertoire. By the thirteenth century, the practice had been imbued with a perception of prestige and infallibility. There was hardly a “greater source of glory” to a medieval physician than the study of urine, wrote Andreas Leennius, himself a medieval physician. Not only could precise diagnoses be made, but the patho-physiological pathway behind the ailment could even be thoroughly explained, simply by looking at pee.

VPN stands for virtual private network, and there are several different kinds, but their general aim is the same: keeping your digital activities and location private. Using a VPN with your computer, phone, or another internet-enabled device can do things like mask your I.P. address and encrypt your internet connection. It’s a great way to get around location-based firewalls (a.k.a. geoblocking) and other forms of internet censorship.

DEATH 100 years ago:
The River Man- The Documentary
Why was an Irishman executed by other Irish men a century ago? The Anglo-Irish Treaty, signed 100 years ago, brought an end to the Irish War of Independence and ending centuries of British colonial control. Ireland became the first nation to break away from the British Empire.
During the war members of the IRA were pitted against the Royal Irish Constabulary, the British Army and the notorious Black and Tans and Auxiliaries. It’s a story of divided loyalties and the unresolved traumas of war, with resonance today as Britain and Ireland struggle to address the legacy of the more recent violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
In an investigation into the fate of one man, James Kane, the River Man, executed by the IRA a century ago, Fergal Keane explores some of these issues. Why did they kill him and what were the consequences for his family and his executioners?

WAR: At the end of the war, photos show dead soldiers in the trenches, sprawled out, crooked or lying mutilated in the mud. And we also see the pictures of men returning, of tired, emaciated or wounded bodies and numbed, empty faces. They were targets, and they survived. But 10 million soldiers and six million civilians were killed in that war.

AGE: Shannon Lawlor By Shannon Lawlor- published February 15, 2023
Today, anti-ageing is often considered a dirty term, with society increasingly telling women to embrace their grey hairs and wrinkles; that age is something to be celebrated and flaunted. At surface level, it would appear we’ve come a long way over the years.
However, images of Madonna at the Grammy awards (opens in new tab), which spread like wildfire across social media and the press recently, tell a different story. News headlines labelled her as “unrecognisable”. One particularly poignant viral Tweet declared: “Letting yourself age gracefully is far more beautiful than plastic surgery.

MISSIONARIES: Foundation of the mission in East Africa
Amongst the most remarkable facts of this time, we must mention the foundation of the mission in East Africa. This had its origin in Reunion in 1860, when Mgr Maupoint, moved by the condition of the slaves, sent his Vicar-General, M. Fava to the Sultan of Zanzibar. M. Fava was himself once a student at the Saint-Esprit Seminary and was accompanied by two other priests, then by some Filles de Marie, founded by Le Vavasseur and some lay people.
When they arrived there, these missionaries quickly understood that this mission was beyond them. The Bishop of Reunion then asked Fr. Schwindenhammer, the Spiritan Superior General, to take it over. That is how the Tanzanian mission began, with the first Spiritan missionaries being sent from Reunion – Frs. Horner, Baur and some brothers.

We can then raise funds through recycling these clothes. All clean unwanted clothes and shoes accepted. No duvets, pillows, cushions or rugs. No wet or dirty clothes. CHANGE in Mass Schedule. At a recent meeting of the Area Pastoral Council (with representatives from Listowel, Moyvane, Knockanure, Lixnaw, Iremore, Rathea, Duagh, Lyrecrompane) the provision of Mass for the 8 communities of the region was reviewed. After exploration of possibilities, given the decline in the number of priests (4 at the moment), it was proposed that, among other adjustments, Moyvane-Knockanure would continue to have its vigil Mass on Saturday evenings at 7.30 and morning Mass at 9.30 in Knockanure. Moyvane Sunday 11.00am Mass may be dropped so that the resident priest (for now) in Moyvane could provide Mass elsewhere in the area at that time. Before this arrangement is confirmed, your comments are welcome, preferably in writing, to Fr. Brendan before May 1st. They will be respected and included in any ultimate outcome.
ROSARY will be said in Knockanure during May on Tuesday and Thursday evening.

MOORE: I was born in Queensland the fourth of six children, Fourth generation Australian born on my mother’s side who were predominantly of Irish stock who came to Australia post the famine years (for the most part from the counties of Tipperary, Wicklow and Donegal). My father came to Australia from Dublin in the 1950s; his father was raised in Maam Connemara and later in Kilkee County Clare but the Moore family going back were from Kilmorna, later known as Kilmeany near Listowel. His mother, was a Barrett from Ennis, County Clare, that whole family very involved in those troubled years of the war of independence in Ireland. Also just out of interest I was part of a little Folk/Irish trio called Welder’s Dog for 10 years or so, with a brother of mine David and our friend Peter Harris, some of our music is still on YouTube I believe. If you listen to Castle Hill Patriots, that is my Dad singing Boolavogue at the start of that song.

Half (23 out of 46) of all presidents of the United States of America can claim a degree of Irish Heritage. In fact, since John F. Kennedy’s trip to Ireland in 1963, almost every US President has traveled to Ireland. This week, we welcome President Joe Biden, he’ll be celebrating 25 years of peace in Northern Ireland with us as well reconnecting with his Blewitt roots in County Mayo and Finnegan roots in County Louth.

P a r t i c u l a r s of a remarkable find in West Limerick nave been learned which are of considerable interest to antiquarians. At Knocknaboul, a bog situate midway between Abbeyfeale and Athea, a string of beads, numbering 100, and graduating in circumference from the size of a crown piece
to a three penny bit, made of Baltic or Scandinavian amber, were dug up by a labourer, in the bog, some ten feet below the surface, together with a number of Penannular Rings, and Fibulae. Most of the articles are as sound as the day they were deposited on the spot, which was then devoid of bog. The articles have been deposited in the National Museum. Some years ago, in the course of a turf-
cutting operation, about 400 yards distant from the place where the articles were discovered, a solid oak paling,

MOTHERS’ PRAYERS; Mothers Prayer Group was started in England in 1995
by two grandmothers. They felt led by the Lord to pray in a special way for their
children. Through prayer they learned that Jesus wishes all mothers to surrender
their children into His care. To take away pain from the mothers and to pour
blessings on their children. Mothers’ prayers have now spread throughout the
world and are in over 100 countries. There have been many wonderful answers to
prayer. Our local meeting is held in St Brigids Oratory, Church of Resurrection,
Park Road, Killarney every Wednesday from 10 to 11 oclock. This year we
celebrate twenty years with Mass at 9.30 @ Church of Resurrection on 19th April.
Any ladies with an interest in praying for children are more than welcome to join us.

At a recent meeting of the Area Pastoral Council (representatives from Listowel, Moyvane, Knockanure, Lixnaw, Iremore, Rathea, Duagh, Lyrecrompane) the provision of Mass for the 8 communities of the region was reviewed. EARTH DAY 22nd of April; I share a few ideas below to help us rethink compulsive consumerism and its effects on the earth. Some of the ideas are directly about reducing consumption and re-using items you already own, but many simply challenge all of us to grow in deeper communion with each other.
So, with that in mind, here is my (by no means exhaustive) list of ideas to help you celebrate our Earth today:
1. Start composting your food scraps
Not only does it reduce your trash, you end up with a nutrient-rich amendment for your garden. Don’t feel like you have to splurge on a prefabricated bin, there are plenty of DIY plans online that use items you can find around your neighborhood. Even apartment dwellers can get creative with a worm farm. Be sure to keep a good ratio of browns:greens (carbon:nitrogen) and avoid tossing in your dairy and meat products.
2. Eat your food
According to Feeding America, almost 40% of the food in our country is thrown away. So, before you go out to a restaurant, check your fridge first. If your own food doesn’t look appetizing anymore, invite friends over for a leftover night. And if you really can’t bring yourself to eat your remnants, you can make delicious broth with past-their-prime vegetables and even freeze wilted greens for future smoothies.

The death has taken place of James Cotter, of Kilconlea, Abbeyfeale at the age of 102 years. Mr. Cotter who was an old age pensioner, and who, up to twelve months ago was able to call personally at t h e local Post Office for his pension, w a s a man Of robust health, and a stranger to Illness.
He was a young man when Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, passed periodically from Derrynane to Limerick, and often recounted the inconvenience he experienced In crossing the flooded Feale previous to the erection of the Feale Bridge in 1837. His knowledge of the history of t h e White-boy movement, in the early twenties was most interesting, as was also his recollection of West Limerick incidents of the ’48 and ’67 periods.

FARMING: prospects for the Irish economy in 2023, often overlooking Irish food production.
Without sounding like a broken record, none of these agencies, as exemplified by the recent reports from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) or the Central Bank, make any reference to the outlook for Irish agriculture or agri-business.
Any objective assessment of Irish economy prospects must surely have something to say about a business sector that supports 220,000 jobs (almost one job in 10 in the Irish economy – CSO).

WILDFIRES: Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) scientists’ monitoring of wildfires around the world tracked significant increases in wildfire carbon emissions for some European regions in summer 2022, following the hot and dry conditions.
The total estimated emissions across the EU countries for summer 2022 were the highest since 2007. France, Spain, Germany and Slovenia also experienced their highest summer wildfire emissions for at least the last 20 years, with southwestern Europe seeing some of the largest fires on record in Europe.

On April 11, 1963, John XXIII issued the encyclical Pacem in Terris, a powerful call for a world in which there were neither victims nor executioners that cemented the pontiff’s reputation as “Good Pope John.” With the world having teetered on the brink of nuclear war during the October 1962 Cuban missile crisis, a papal appeal for “peace on earth” was well received everywhere, including the Soviet Union — although the view in some Vatican quarters that the masters of the Kremlin took the encyclical’s message to heart was rather naive.
What, then, did Pacem in Terris teach? And how does its analysis of world affairs look, six decades later?

SYNOD 2021-2024 FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH: communion, participation and mission
In October 2021 the Catholic Church’s synodal process on the theme of synodality began. This was
the first time that a worldwide listening process and consultation with parishes and dioceses was
attempted and many people in Ireland took part in a listening process during the early months of
2022. Did you take part? Have you been wondering what happened after that?
Much has happened since then. Your participation formed part of our national document that was
sent to the Synod office in Rome in August 2022. It also formed part of a global document called

presentation given by the Irish delegation that travelled to Prague this February for the first ever
Continental Assembly of the Catholic Church’s synodal process. Please visit
